Sans Serif Fonts

Sans Serif Fonts: common questions

Which sans serif is easiest to read?

Humanist designs with open apertures and a generous x-height. They keep letters like a, c and e distinct, which is what actually determines reading speed at small sizes.

Can I use a sans serif for an entire brand?

Yes, and many brands do. Use two or three weights for hierarchy and add a serif only if you publish long articles that need a change of texture.

What size should sans serif body text be?

Sixteen pixels on screen with line spacing of about 150 percent, and 10 to 11 points in print. Smaller than that and the gains of a clean typeface disappear.
