Free fonts for book covers and titles

A cover sells the book from a thumbnail on a store page before anyone sees it on a shelf, so the title face has to work at 150 pixels and at 15 centimetres. The fonts here are chosen for that range: high-contrast serifs for literary fiction and memoir, heavy display faces for thrillers, and elegant romans for non-fiction titles that need authority.

Pair the title font with a restrained serif or sans for the author name and tagline, and keep the hierarchy simple. All fonts are free to download; the license file in each ZIP says whether a published, sold book is covered.

Cover typography by genre

Thrillers and crime lean on condensed bold caps with tight tracking; romance and women's fiction use scripts or soft serifs; literary fiction favours elegant serifs with generous spacing; business and self-help want clean sans serifs at large sizes. Whatever the genre, test the cover at thumbnail size: if the title is not legible at 100 px tall, increase weight or size.

Questions about fonts for book covers

Can I use a free font on a book I sell on Amazon?
Only if the font's license permits commercial use. Check the license text in the ZIP; many free fonts allow it, others require a one-time commercial license from the designer.
What font size should a book title be?
On a 6×9 inch cover, titles typically run 60–120 pt depending on length; the author name sits at 24–36 pt. Always check the thumbnail version for legibility.
Which fonts work for the inside of the book?
Use a dedicated text serif at 10.5–12 pt for body copy. Display and script fonts belong on the cover and chapter titles only.
